Map of High Bridge detailing actions on April 6, 1865, taken from the original High Bridge and Farmville Map. From surveys under the direction of Bvt. Brig. Gen. N. Michler, Maj. of Engineers. By command of Bvt. Maj. Gen. A.A. Humphreys, Brig. Gen. Chief of Engineers 1867.
Note the four earthen fortifications at either end of the bridge and the wagon bridge where the point of bubble rest. You can see the spaces between the spans on the west end Cumberland side of the bridge. The spans were sketched missing as they had been burned during the retreat by the Confederate Army on the morning of April 7th, 1865. The Confederates tried to burn the wagon bridge below but were unable to as the Union army was able to capture and and douse the flames before the fire could take hold.
